OHNY honors Ruth Ro at Open City Benefit

Open House New York (OHNY)’s annual fundraiser, the Open City Benefit, is a celebration of the power of place, and the vibrancy of New York City.

The Open City Award recognizes a place of singular importance to the past, present, and future of New York City. This year the spotlight is being shown on the Brooklyn Navy Yard. This year’s event was held on April 30 at the Dattner Architects-designed BLDG 303, near the Sand Street Gates. “From a bustling naval shipyard to an urban manufacturing and innovation hub, the Brooklyn Navy Yard is a national model for adaptive reuse and a local driver of inclusive economic growth,” Kristin Labuz, Executive Director, OHNY.

Ruth’s remarks at the event provided insight into how they have chosen to practice. “We often romanticize architecture and the singular genius behind it, but real New Yorkers know better. Buildings like BLDG 303 come to life through public private partnerships, aspirational public agencies, brave private clients, vocal community groups, and designers who can share their varied experience and show up with authenticity.”

Ruth Ro, partner, has led all Dattner Architects’ work at the BNY for the last decade. Ruth was honored on behalf of the 303 team, alongside Beth Rooney, ports Director, PANYNJ, and Lindsay Greene, president, Brooklyn Navy Yard. BLDG 303 was the first ground up new building developed by the Navy Yard and was done through a public-private partnership with Steiner NYC.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to be part of a team that’s helping to shape places in a way that brings new life, opportunity, and resilience to neighborhoods across the city.”
