Inclusive Design in Focus: Dattner Architects Supports NY Bill for All-Gender Restrooms
Dattner Architects’ longstanding commitment to inclusive, equitable design is spotlighted in the latest issue of Oculus, AIA New York’s quarterly magazine. The Teamwork issue features Senior Designer Troy Lacombe and Partner Ruth Ro in an article titled “A Stall for One, A Stall for All” by Jennifer Krichels, which explores the design and policy momentum behind New York State’s proposed A6964 bill—legislation that would set new standards for multi-user, all-gender restrooms in public facilities.
Building on Dattner Architects’ ongoing advocacy for equity in the built environment, Troy and Ruth contributed both vision and expertise to this effort. Troy developed the article’s renderings and diagrams, helping to illustrate an approach to restroom design grounded in privacy, accessibility, and safety. Working alongside engineers, advocates, and partners like Build Out Alliance, the AIANY LGBTQIA+ Alliance, and Bria Donohue at AIANY, the team proposed forward-thinking, feasible solutions aimed at meeting the needs of all New Yorkers. This collaboration reflects our broader mission to design spaces that serve the public good.
