Sustainability in Architecture: Housing

As we launch our Sustainability Video Series, we take a look at our journey—past, present, and future—in sustainable design.

To mark the ten-year anniversary of Via Verde welcoming its first residents, we sat down with Principal Emeritus Bill Stein to reflect on the project’s origins and its role in redefining sustainability in affordable housing.

We also spoke with Principal John Woelfling, an expert in Passive House Design, about 425 Grand Concourse—the largest Passive House (PHIUS) project in North America. His insights reveal how the project has pushed the boundaries of sustainable development at scale.

Rounding out these perspectives, Director of Sustainability Shefali Sanghvi offered a grounded outlook on our aspirations for housing sustainability, sharing valuable lessons from many of our past projects.

At Dattner Architects, we recognize the critical need for continuous evaluation as we work to embed sustainable standards in our design process. We thank our clients—Jonathan Rose Companies, Phipps Houses, Trinity Financial, and MBD Community Housing—for their shared commitment to quality, affordability, and sustainability, and our community within and beyond the office for its dedication to raising the bar in every project we undertake.
