“Unleashing Housing Supply”: Keith Engel’s research contributes to Global Ideas for Housing Every New Yorker Report
On April 17th, Associate Principal Keith Engel’s collaborative research, “Unleashing Housing Supply in Christchurch, Singapore, and Seoul,” was published within the Urban Design Forum Big Swings Fellowship Report: Global Ideas for Housing Every New Yorker.
Throughout the past year, Engel worked with a group of interdisciplinary NYC housing leaders, bringing together perspectives across architecture, urban planning, design, law, and policy to investigate “big swings” that other global cities have taken towards their housing crises. Global Ideas for Housing Every New Yorker is the culmination of a year of research, containing a series of case studies and policy proposals.
“The Urban Design Forum’s 2025 ‘Big Swings’ Global Exchange fellowship provides the opportunity to drive necessary conversations on equitably moving the needle on the New York City housing crisis. At this critical point, with homelessness numbers not seen since the Great Depression, our fellowship looked broadly at other global cities for precedents, success stories, and hope, to model what reform could, and should, look like for New York City. My cohort, drawn from a range of diverse yet complementary backgrounds in housing, advocacy, policy, design, journalism, and development, and I invested in a year-long dialogue, culminating in policy proposals to ensure that every New Yorker has a home.” – Keith Engel AIA, LEED AP BD+C, CPHD
