Dattner Architects’ recently completed DSNY Brooklyn District 3 Garage & Offices was featured in an article by Bernard Pollara of The Architect’s Newspaper.
The article highlights the building’s emphasis on transparency, openness, and environmental performance. Bernard Pollara writes: “Each face of Brooklyn Community District 3 sanitation garage…was designed by Dattner Architects to respect its users, visitors, and neighbors. Fritted and transparent glazing provides interior views and daylight for sanitation workers and caters to both nearby residents and pedestrians. Aluminum fins aid in passive shading and precast concrete panels dampen sound.”
Located in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, the 220,000-square-foot facility provides a new home for Brooklyn’s District 3 Department of Sanitation team and supports the daily operations of one of New York City’s essential public services.

The facility incorporates an extensive green roof designed to reduce heat island effect and retain stormwater. The façade composition balances precast concrete panels with strategically placed glazed and screened openings, creating a rhythmic expression that brings natural light deep into the building. Integrated brise-soleil elements modulate daylight and solar gain while reinforcing transparency and strengthening the facility’s connection to the surrounding community.
District 3 Garage is recognized as part of an ongoing commitment to thoughtful civic infrastructure that supports essential city services, sustainability, and the essential workers who keep New York running every day.
