Dattner Architects’ DSNY Brooklyn District 3 Garage & Offices was featured in Building Design+Construction.

Written by Peter Fabris, the article highlights the extensive daylighting and sustainable design strategies incorporated throughout the 220,000 SF facility. Located in Bedford-Stuyvesant, the building houses the district’s full fleet of 68 vehicles, repair facilities, offices, and space for 120 workers.

Extensive glazing along Nostrand Avenue brings natural light into the garage while creating a sense of transparency between the facility and the surrounding community. Solar sunshades limit heat gain while maintaining abundant daylight, and vehicle traffic is directed away from the neighborhood’s primary thoroughfare and away from residential zoning.

Sustainability features include a 46,000 SF green roof planted with native species, a photovoltaic canopy, rainwater harvesting, electric-vehicle infrastructure, and energy-efficient mechanical systems. Resilient building systems help ensure that this essential public facility can remain fully operational during extreme weather events.
